Clinton PA Debate Questions

Tue Apr 15, 2008 at 07:37:17 AM PDT

So, the big PA debate is tomorrow night. I have a few questions I'd like to see the ABC folks ask Senator Clinton. Here goes:

Senator, Can you name a job that you've had that now either doesn't exist or is being done by someone overseas?

When was the last time your salary provided more income than your investments?

When was the last time you punched a time clock? Or faced a deadline you couldn't fudge without getting fired? What was the last job you had where your lunch break was determined by a manager's schedule instead of yours? When was the last time you had to let your family or friends down because your boss gave you a ton of work at the last minute? When was the last time you even had a boss who could fire you, let alone cut your hours (and therefore your pay) just for looking at him/her funny?

When was the last time you pumped your own gas? Or had to try flag a stranger down to help with a flat tire? Or washed your own car?

When was the last time you had to wait to see a doctor or stand in line to fill a prescription? Have you ever skipped going to the dentist or put off getting new glasses for financial reasons?

When was the last time you got a parking ticket? Or got pulled over for speeding on the way to work? Or had to appear in person at traffic court? Do you remember the last time you were asked a question by a uniformed cop who wasn't part of your security detail? Have you ever had to take your shoes off at the airport or been pulled out of line to have your carry-on wanded?

When was the last time your next door neighbors bought something for their kids that you couldn't afford for your own? Tell us about the last time the household budget dictated your family's weekend recreation choices. How long has it been since you and Bill argued about money (debates about which off-shore account to use doesn't count)?

Have you ever had to try to get four people three meals out of one roast?

When was the last time you bought a how-to book or surfed the DIY sites on line to find out how to fix something around the house because paying someone else to do it just wasn't an option? When did you last shovel a walk, or rake up leaves, or mow the grass? How long has it been since you scrubbed a toilet, or cleaned an oven, or cleared the fridge of mysterious science projects?

Tell us about the last time you got cut off in traffic or had to deal with a rude jerk on the train.

Describe the last homeless guy who asked you for cash. How much did you give him?

Because here's the thing, Senator-- all those questions above (and many far trickier)-- that's the shit that builds up over time and makes people bitter. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Sure, we put on a brave face face for our friends and dress up nice for church and pretend we're not worried, pretend we're doing better than we are-- no one likes to look like a loser-- but the truth is that we are losing.

You look at this situation and encourage us to get a braver mask. Barack Obama looks at the situation and looks for ways to make the mask unnecessary. He spoke the truth, and while the truth isn't pretty to look at, we love him for it and we'll pave the road to the White House with our backs if that's what it takes to give him a shot at making things better.
